An intense crime novel with a strong helping of romance, The Devil Inside is set in contemporary New Orleans. She had always been fiercely protective of her heart… until she met Emma, a femme farm girl from Wisconsin who won her over. Fast forward seven years, and Cain and Emma are both far down a dangerous path. Emma ended their unhealthy relationship four years prior in a shocking betrayal that made Casey Enterprises vulnerable to someone bent on destroying it.
Cain has been picking up the pieces ever since. Can they rebuild their relationship after so much mutual suffering? The Blind Goddess is the first book and is it ever a great and dark beginning. The case is two connected deaths: one of a small-time drug dealer beaten to death and one of a crooked lawyer shot to death. Although dealing with this horror is now her job by choice, Faye has a personal connection: when she moved in with her grandparents at age six after her parents died in a car crash, she discovered that her grandfather was a misogynist psychopath who tortured and killed women.
Be warned: this is the darkest book on this list and it is decidedly gruesome and scary, although it is also a testament to the strength of women who have survived unthinkable horror. Her work is interrupted by Colorado police, who recruit her to find her brother Zeb, a confessed murderer who is on the run somewhere in the same back country where Willa is.
She hikes through New Mexico and Colorado tracking Zeb, who always seems to remain a few steps ahead of her while the police trail behind. The story she has created is as rich with adventure and thrills as the human relationships she portrays are complex and authentic. Have any dark lesbian mystery and thriller recommendations?

Start with Generation Loss — Cass is a New York art photographer who was briefly fashionable in the punk era and is on the skids thirty years later. To bail her out, an old acquaintance throws her some work in Maine, which lands her in the middle of an old and still dangerous mystery. Dani Fenton thought her life was sorted. But when her private and professional lives collide, she is forced to walk a dangerous line and risk everything for love.
At home Dani has a loving partner with a young child who adores her. Life is good until Susanna returns.
Enigmatic, sexual, hot-tempered and fragile, Susanna is irresistible to Dani, who soon finds herself in a spiral of obsession and violence that threatens to devastate every aspect of her life. After parking his car, he took off on foot from the boulder-strewn area, heading for Little Round Top.
Yes, there was a road winding around the back side of the hill famous for the 20th Maine's heroic standoff, but driving took the fun out of it. This time of year he was likely to see deer — even bats if he was silent enough — blending in with the darkness.

He crept closer, pulling his weapon. Vandals or relic hunters, most likely. Either way he wasn't approaching multiple unknowns unarmed. Griffin clicked on his flashlight, holding his weapon steady. Slipping it from her clutch nestled tightly between her body and the stiff chair arm in the darkened concert hall, she glanced at the number and recognition dawned.
How to Find That Book You've Spent Years Looking For
At nine o'clock on a Saturday night? The man really had no life outside of work. She looked over at the date her mother had set her up on and winced. Actually, she was only pretending at one. Had been ever since Nauseated terror sloshed over her in a clawing rush, frustration and irritation following. How could it come on so fast?
Sucking in what was supposed to be a deep inhale, her rib cage barely inched up, but she focused on the stage before her and forced herself to release the pitiful amount of air slowly, like a balloon squeaking out tiny spurts as it deflated. One, two, three, four. She let the memory of panic drop, or at least pretended to. She was getting good at that — pretending.
But she had no choice.
She refused to let the world see what a mess she'd become. Least of all, a ranger who was too uptight for his own good — or anyone else's. At least with Ranger McCray what you saw was what you got. He didn't tiptoe around her, which was refreshing, but then again, he didn't know. Though she doubted it would make a difference.
The man possessed no filter, no sense of pretense, which she admired The other half she wanted to throttle his ridiculously handsome neck.

God was using McCray and their time together as a test. She'd sensed it the first time they met, but it was a test she'd ignore. Despite what God thought, she was anything but ready for it.
